They are predominantly blue to gray in color and have a characteristic dorsal fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire length of the back. ![]() Their large size and spirited fight make them a favorite among trophy fishers. Sailfish - The fastest fish in the ocean, sailfish can reach speeds of 68 miles per hour. These aggressive herbivores have a set of teeth are made for eating berries and cracking seed pods, not gripping or tearing flesh. When hooked they’ll leap into the air several times in an attempt to throw your hook. A relative of the piranha, Machaca put up such a good fight that their aerial display mimics a baby tarpon. Machaca - one of the most exciting freshwater game fish found in Central America. The Grouper family ranges from the small Cabrillas that are often caught when bait fishing on the rocks, to the larger Big-Eye, Yellowfin, Broomtail and finally the Goliath Grouper, which can grow to several hundred pounds. ![]() Grouper - Many species of Grouper can be caught on Costa Rica fishing tours. This little guy was caught on a 24" trolled live ladyfish. To put this picture into perspective, I'm the guy on the left and I am 6'2" and 255lbs and Captain Eduardo next to me is similar in size. Their appearance is photo worthy with a fantastic fanned spine and black stripes along the sides. They are considered an inshore species typically being caught between 20 and 150 feet of water. The roosterfish patrols the Pacific waters from Baja, California down to Peru predominantly around rocky points, reefs and river mouths.
